The Pen Pals unit is an experience created in partnership with the Downtown School and coordinated with their K-12 Counselor, Mary Beth Edens. Wake Forest students in the campus Counseling Children and Adolescent course interact with DTS students through weekly letter exchanges for five weeks. Mrs. Edens selects DTS students to take part in the program based on their academic and social/emotional developmental needs.

At the conclusion of the five weeks, WFU students visit DTS students and connect during a pizza party. The program is based on Schoolwide Enrichment Models (SEM) grounded in culturally-responsive teaching and learning practices, and facilitates learning for WFU students in the areas of child development and the utilization of counseling and communication skills with younger clients.

We’re so glad our students get the opportunity to do good work in our community!
