The Essentials of APA Style (7th Edition)
In this 2-hour web-based training, Heartful Editor will overview the essential guidelines in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 7th Edition), including paper elements and format, writing style and grammar, bias-free language guidelines, the mechanics of style, tables and figures, works credited in the text, and formatting the reference list. We also highlight tips and strategies for self-editing theses, dissertations, manuscripts for publication, and more. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions as we discuss the many nuances of APA and academic writing!
The Essentials of APA Style will be offered from Wednesday, August 26th to Wednesday, December 16th at various dates and times. The same webinar is offered every week, so please register for only one date. Webinars are limited to 500 participants per session and fill up quickly. Advanced registration is required. All participants will receive a certificate of completion for those who may be required to submit proof of attendance to their department or campus.

RISE Model Training

The RISE Model—Reframe, Integrate, Strengthen, Establish—is a culturally adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and self-affirmation framework designed to help clinicians address sociopolitical stress in counseling. It is a peer reviewed published model. The model integrates evidence-based CBT strategies with culturally responsive and identity-affirming practices, with particular relevance for supporting Black and Brown communities navigating the psychological impact of today’s social and political climate.
During this two-hour training, participants will learn practical strategies for incorporating the RISE Model into their clinical work and strengthening their ability to respond to sociopolitical stress in culturally responsive ways.
The training will be facilitated by Char Newton, PhD, LP, Psychologist, Scholar, and Author, and Simone Miller, B.A., Graduate Student.
In addition to attending the training, participants will have the opportunity to voluntarily participate in a research study examining the RISE Model by completing a brief pre- and post-training survey. Participation in the research study is optional and is not required to attend the training.

Culturally Responsive Ethical Decision-Making

Description:
Standard ethical training often focuses strictly on risk management, leaving providers ill-equipped when professional codes clash with the cultural realities of their clients. This interactive 3-hour training moves beyond “what to do when you have a dilemma” by examining ethics as a proactive, culturally grounded practice.
Drawing from current literature on transcultural ethical decision-making, this session will assist providers in deconstructing standard Western ethical assumptions (e.g. rigid boundaries, hyper-individualism) and evaluating how these assumptions can inadvertently harm Latine clients. Participants will explore common ethical friction points—such as dual relationships and confidentiality—through the lens of core Latine values like personalismo, familismo, and respeto. Finally, attendees will learn and apply a structured, transcultural decision-making matrix to complex case scenarios, ensuring their ethical choices are both professionally sound and culturally affirming.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Deconstruct Western ethical assumptions embedded in the core ethical principles (the “Big Four”) and identify how they can inadvertently harm Latine clients.
- Evaluate common ethical dilemmas (such as boundaries, dual relationships, and confidentiality) using a culturally responsive, epistemic justice lens to accurately differentiate between ethical violations and cultural self-preservation.
- Apply a structured, culturally inclusive ethical decision-making model to complex clinical scenarios, integrating Latine values (personalismo, familismo, respeto) into everyday choices.

What does safety feel like in the body? How do experiences of oppression shape the nervous system’s capacity to access safety, connection, and self-responsiveness? And how can clinicians support clients in cultivating greater access to relative safety, even in the presence of ongoing stressors and inequities?
This highly experiential workshop facilitated by a psychotherapist and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner invites clinicians to explore these questions through both theory and practice by integrating social justice perspectives with a somatic lens. Participants will explore safety as a dynamic, moment-to-moment embodied experience that exists on a continuum rather than as a fixed state, and is influenced by history, context, power, and relationships.
Through a combination of didactic teaching, experiential exercises, partner activities, and guided somatic practices, participants will develop greater capacity to recognize and assess opportunities for cultivating relative safety in clinical settings. Attendees will leave with practical tools and at least three somatic interventions that can be integrated into clinical work to support clients in developing greater resilience and embodied experiences of safety.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe the impact of systemic oppression on nervous system functioning and experiences of safety among historically marginalized client populations.
- Integrate a somatic understanding of safety as a fluid, moment-to-moment experience that exists on a continuum rather than as a fixed or absolute state and acknowledges the influence of context, power, and lived experience.
- Identify and assess opportunities to enhance relative safety through interventions targeting three domains: the body, the physical environment, and the therapeutic or relational field.
- Utilize at least three somatic interventions that support clients in cultivating greater experiences of relative safety and cultivating resilience
